The Chevrolet Corvair was a compact vehicle from the General Motor’s Chevrolet division and it belonged to the 1960-1969 model years. It was the only mass-produced American designed car that featured the engine which was air-cooled and rear mounted. The vehicle’s range included 4-door sedans, 2-door coupe, convertible and 4-door station wagon body types and it was also available in commercial vans, passenger vans and pickup truck varieties. Chevrolet Corvair competed with the likes of a Volkswagen Beetle, the German import and the Plymouth Valiant and Ford Falcon. The legacy of the Corvair was briefly affected by a controversy revolving around its handling which eventually resulted in Ralph Nader’s Unsafe at Any Speed list. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted an inquiry into the allegations and found that it did not posses loss of control greater than any of its contemporaries. For each of its initial six model years Corvair registered a sale exceeding 200, 000 units.
