Cavalier was introduced after its replace Monza which at that time was available in 3-door hatch back, 2-door coupe and 3-door station wagon. The model received a restyling in 1988 and it saw the hatchback 2-door being discarded, while the sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible continued. The Coupe received a full exterior renovation the sedan and wagon remain unchanged. A complete redesign was carried out for the Cavalier in 1995 which made the car more aerodynamic and bigger in size; some of the minor styling was borrowed from the Chevrolet Camaro and Caprice however some basic styles were retained. Cavalier became the best selling car by 1997 in the entire GM lineup.
