Mitsubishi Outlander Sport models recalled due to malfunction airbag fears

There is news that Mitsubishi is recalling the 2013 Outlander Sports from 733 owners due to airbag problem. Snag has been found in the seat mounted safety air bags in Outlanders that were draped with leather seat covers and the problem is attributed to the wrong routing of the air bag wiring during the installation of seat covers at the port.

Reports coming from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that the problem only comes up when the driver tries to adjust the seat height. It also means that the airbag may not deploy after all at the event of a side impact, if the wiring is not proper.

So far no accidents or injuries have been reported and the manufacturing defect has been found only in vehicles there were assembled from 20 July, 2012 to 29 May, 2013. It has been confirmed that Mitsubishi will be sending a notice in this regard to the owner who in turn would require reporting to their local dealers for charge free assessment and repairs. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain of its 2013 Outlander sport model that were built between 20 July, 2012 and 29 May, 2013 and fitted with leather seat. The affected vehicles might have been installed faulty wiring on the driver side seat during the leather seat installation. The faulty wiring may trigger a false alarm by activating the airbag warning. In the event of an accident the driver side airbag may not deploy and might increase the risk of an injury. Mitsubishi in the regard will inform all the drivers who own these vehicle and the dealers will repair them free of charge. Owners are also provided with the number 1-800-222-0037 to call Mitsubishi to address their problem.
